Speaking on Interenet of Toys at Insafe Trainer Meeting Zagreb

On July 18th I’ll be speaking along with the wonderful Barbara Buchegger of saferinternet.at at the Insafe Trainer Meeting Zagreb on the Internet Of Toys. Here’s the outline for the talk:

#toysrus?

Throughout the ages kids have imagined their toys coming to life & being able to have conversations. We have finally reached that stage, but the kids never imagined their most intimate conversations being stored somewhere and freely accessible.

What will happen with the information collected by the “toys”? And will our childhood dreams become our privacy nightmares.

In this workshop we will explore the world of the so-called Internet of Toys and discover if our games will end in tears.

thehoff

Enjoyed participating in the 2nd CRYPTOlunch on June 2nd where I talked about social media, phishing, spear phishing and ransomware & how information shared on social media can be used against the poster.

The second CRYPTOlunch was organized on Thursday 2nd of June 2016 at the Representation of the European Commission in Luxembourg ( Maison de l’Europe). This event, which dealt with social media, took place during the lunch break and gathered many curious persons. This short conference was given by two speakers: Matthieu Farcot, Legal Affairs Manager at SECURITYMADEIN.LU, and Chris Pinchen, founder of Practical Privacy .

Matthieu Farcot explained how social media handles users’ personal data and Chris Pinchen described how data coming from social media can be used against its users.

Privacy Salon Special: Quinn Norton – Nothing Ever Ends (18/05)

quinn

At the Privacy Salon we are usually looking at how to protect and secure our data on networked devices. But we don’t always examine how we actually got the Internet we have now nor what it’ll be like soon.

So we are pleased to present this Privacy Salon Special where Quinn Norton will be telling us how Nothing Ever Ends

Bio/description-y stuff: Quinn Norton, internet journalist and essayist, previously of Wired and The Message. I read too much history, use too much technology, obsess too much about security, know too much nerdy stuff, and am way too interested in the Mongolians.

Nothing Ever Ends is a fast romp though the history of computer and internet culture, from over two thousand years ago to several years in the future. I’ll tell the stories of some of key players in the history of the net, including the 19th century robber barons in America, Han dynasty feng shui practitioners, God, the RIAA, 90s software pirates, a little-know greek goddess, the Seattle Police Department. Over enough time, all the consequences become unintended. But all those unintended consequences give us the internet we have now, and the future we will have.

All will be revealed on May 18th, 19:00

CRYPTOlunch – The Internet of Things

cryptolunch

I was recently invited by SECURITYMADEIN.LU to present at the first CRYPTOlunch in Luxembourg

The official website explains the event:

Cryptolunch is organized by SECURITYMADEIN.LU, in partnership with the European Commission Representation in Luxembourg. Cryptolunch events aim at create a place where European citizens and information security experts can meet each month and discuss about topics related to privacy and online security. This initiative reflects the ongoing efforts undertaken by the European Commission in order to protect the privacy of european citizens.

Privacy is the border where you draw a line and define how far society can intrude into your personal life. More connected than ever, with a growing amount of personal data provided to organizations both online and offline, privacy is an individual right and it needs to be protected.

  • Meet the experts
  • No previous knowledge nor experience required
  • Free event with food (it’s a lunch)
  • Come with your questions

The topic of the lunch was the Internet of Shit Things:

Connected digital scales, connected trackers, connected toys, TVs, books… We are or will all daily use these new devices but: What type of security is set around such devices? How personal is data  gathered? By whom is it used? What are your rights? Come and meet us, we will have answers! Event in English and French – Speakers: Chris Pinchen And Matthieu Farcot
